01.09.14 — Ästhetik & Material

flow is a living kitchen where nature and technology are integrated in a symbiotic relationship, processes flow into one another in a natural cycle, efficiently utilizing energy, waste, water and other natural resources. it provides a space not only for preparing food but an environment that gives a better understanding of how natural processes work. a kitchen where food is grown, stored, cooked and composted to grow more food.

the flow products can be used independently but are far more effective when they work in concert as part of a larger system. the individual objects are relatively uncomplicated, acting as simple vehicles for the more com- plex natural processes to do the work. this kitchen is developed as a flexible system where resources are reused by several elements creating a dynamic flow between the products.

Indoor Door Table
01.09.14 — Ästhetik & Material

A signature of Manoteca’s aesthetic is the transformation of commonplace objects. The Indoor Door Table reconsiders the functionality of vintage exterior doors from the 1960’s. At first glance the Indoor appears as a modest wooden table with distinctive, aged metal hinges and a handle. As a dining room table it can seat eight guests, but the surprise is revealed when the handle is pulled opened to reveal a hidden desk. Lined with recycled cowhide pockets, the desk is both functional and a celebration of vintage design and retains its integrity because its treated with natural paints.

Trash Cube
01.09.14 — Ästhetik & Material

Tons of material produced by Eternit are thrown away every year. The idea of the Trash Cube was to design the most simple object recycling as more scraps as possible. The Trash Cube is made of Eternit (which is the name of the Swiss factory and of the material they produces).

Made of cement and fibers this material is used for moulding tiles for architecture, flowerpots or some outdoor objects. Tons of left over material is thrown away every year and the purpose of the Trash Cube was to find a way to recycle most of it. The idea was to design the most basic mould in which the workers would throw scraps as soon as they have finish to mould the other pieces in production.

Drying in few hours the Trash Cube is removed from the mould every morning. As the Trash Cube is made of very different sizes and shapes of raw material, each stool has a different appearance - like small unique sculptures. This very simple technique makes the price very cheap (about a 100 Eur/piece).

TEXTILE STORAGE
01.09.14 — Ästhetik & Material

Young German Designer Meike Harde has designed a textile furniture series called London that consists of a wardrobe, a cabinet as well as a bag-like storage object and a stool.

Using textiles instead of the typical materials that storage cabinets are made of, such as wood, Harde seeks to prove that textiles can still perform the same function of wood, such as protection from sun, dust, etc except give a more lightweight and mobile feeling.

DODAI
01.09.14 — Ästhetik & Material

They were designed by Peter Marigold and realised by the Japanese furniture company Hinoki Kogei.

The benches are created from a log split into two pieces. On top of this is mounted a covering created from woven grass (igusa) and hiba rods. This can be rolled back so as to use the interior space for stroage. It is held in place with coloured bungees stretched over dark hardwood turned knobs. The wood used is 'hiba' a type of Japanese Cypress. Both the igusa and hiba have fantastic natural odours.

'Dodai' means 'base' in Japanese and the benches loosely reference architectural beams laid on the foundations of houses.

This cabinet is created by open source design tools. You can construct a custom cabinet to fit your room, by dragging and dropping boxes onto an online sheet of wood. But if you don't want to make design decisions, here's the easy way. This composition has been pre-designed by the creators themselves: architectural design studio EventArchitectuur. It is what they think is the best.

Items on display included Jesse Visser's expanded steel Harold Cabinet, made from galvanised steel and available in a golden finish. "The overlay of the grids composing the cabinet create a moiré effect which makes the object attractive to observe while walking around it," said Visser. "They also make it possible to see what is inside the cabinet, so the objects inside can become part of their environment." The cabinet can be used as a wardrobe or for office storage.

Lucas said she used the materials because they are "meaningful in terms of their uses in the outside world. They say a lot and are also low key, they don't overwhelm the sculptures."

Produced in collaboration with specialist fabricators the London Art Workshop, Sarah Lucas Furniture (2013) comprises mass-produced, basic construction materials – concrete breeze blocks and MDF – that have pervaded Lucas' art for several years. For each of the pieces, identically sized and exactingly arranged breeze blocks have been embedded into hard edged, minimalist MDF frameworks, creating a brutalist kind of inlay or 'intarsia', the antique practice of setting wood or stone within a surface.

The Bosbank Bench
01.09.14 — Ästhetik & Material

Here is a natural looking bench you can consider. Taking inspiration from a tree trunk, the Bosbank bench can be a great sitting solution paired with some enhancements that should make it stable and functional.

The bench was designed by Maandag Meubels and should be a great piece that can inspire people towards putting out natural resources to good use. The bench was reportedly produced with less energy and power, making the production process pretty much eco-friendly and conservative. The Bosbank bench is held together by orange straps that attach it to its aluminum and wooden legs.

Inspired by the pulp spacers used in packaging, the Pulp furniture is designed. The said furniture is composed of a coffee table, stools, and a clock or wall hanging. Even though these furniture sets are made out of paper, they are sturdy enough to carry weights. Presumably, these furniture sets uses recycled paper to produce pulp. Created by designers Odelia and Dan, the pulp furniture looks stylish enough to be on any modern homes. If made out of recycled paper, through the pulp furniture, landfills will definitely be minimized drastically and used papers will be given a new life instead of having them landed into our landfills.

The selected approach removes all obstacles from the floor to provide the greatest possible flexibility. Two basic elements are used: firstly, the central core, comprising the staircase, some shelves and the larder. The core is at the centre of the main space under the mansard roof. It connects the access floor and the space under the roof and allows the natural lighting coming through the roof into the living room. Secondly, there are two side strips for the functional elements (kitchen, bathroom, storage space and domestic appliances).

Growth Table
01.09.14 — Ergonomie & Raum

Growth Table is one of a series of objects and spaces modified from a variety of familiar types to sponsor specific activities for adults as well as children. It creates an instant and intergenerational community united by the simple act of drawing.
Children impulsively and un-selfconsciously indulge in spontaneous mark-making when presented with a place to sit, a rightly-positioned surface, and colorful instruments with which to draw. The Growth Table creates these conditions - but at a range of scales - to also attract older children and adults who share the memory of countless hours of childhood art-making. The structure activates a public outdoor or indoor space by providing a catalyst for spontaneous social behavior that is both exceptional and utterly familiar. When the form of the Table is multiplied or expanded, it creates a community scaled art-parklett, or transforms a public interior into a literal “drawing room.”

Clothing designed for chairs by Bernotat and Co
01.09.14 — Ergonomie & Raum

Dutch designers Bernotat & Co have created a range of coverings for chairs that are modelled on a grandma's dressing gown, baggy overalls and an oven mitt. "Being slightly strange, some of them maybe even awkward, they trigger emotional reactions," said the designers. "People relate differently to the chairs when they're dressed up and the chairs suddenly acquire a certain anthropomorphic quality." The newest piece of the chair clothing, Big Baggy, is made from heavy duty canvas used in overalls and work wear. The back features two big pockets for newspapers, books and magazines, while the side pockets have space for stationary, iPads, iPhones and a hanging loop for headphones.
